***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Committee Hearing to Examine Local Ideas to Reform Federal Job Training Programs

On Tuesday, August 30th at 11:00 a.m. PDT, Chairman John Kline (R-MN) will join Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV) in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District to host a field hearing entitled, “Examining Local Solutions to Strengthen Federal Job Training Programs.” The field hearing will take place at the Opportunity Village, Ralph and Betty Englestad Campus, located at 6050 South Buffalo Drive in Las Vegas.

Today, the federal government administers a range of initiatives intended to help workers gain the skills and training necessary to succeed in the workplace. In 1998, President Clinton signed into law the Workforce Investment Act, which streamlined numerous federal programs and established a system of one-stop centers for workers to receive job training and employment services in a more efficient and effective way. The law has been due for reauthorization since 2003.

In recent years, numerous states have taken steps to reduce the bureaucracy of job training programs and improve the quality of services offered to workers. As part of its effort to reauthorize the 1998 law, the committee is seeking input from local leaders on responsible reforms that will strengthen support for workers and promote better use of taxpayer dollars.

The field hearing will feature two panel discussions. The first panel will examine the economic and workforce needs of Nevada, while the second panel will focus on current job training programs and their ability to enhance the career opportunities of workers.
