Democrats Oppose @EdLaborGOP Efforts to Demand Transparency from Biden on Student Loan Bailout and School Closures

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 15, 2022
Today, Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement after Democrats blocked Republican efforts to give the American people more transparency regarding the Biden administration’s decision to enact an illegal student loan debt scheme and collude with teachers unions to keep K-12 schools closed:

“These resolutions will give the American people the transparency they deserve from the Biden administration. This administration’s habit of acting by executive fiat is an insult to Congressional authority and to the American people we represent. This illegal overreach must end! And Committee Democrats’ decision to prevent the American people from getting the answers they deserve is not only shameful but a dereliction of their oversight duty.

“Our country was built on the consent of the governed, yet taxpayers did not sign off on being gouged by this administration so it could advance an illegal, irresponsible student loan debt scheme.

“Nor did parents consent to school shutdowns. We need an education system focused on educating students, not appeasing powerful special interest groups.

“It is shameful Committee Democrats did not support today’s resolutions, which are crucial to fulfilling our oversight duties as members of the House of Representatives. It’s time for the Biden administration to realize the government works on behalf of the American people, not the other way around.”

BACKGROUND: The Committee reported the following three resolutions of inquiry unfavorably to the House of Representatives:
  • H. Res. 1295: Directs the Secretary of Education to transmit certain documents to the House of Representatives relating to the Department of Education’s cost estimates for the Secretary’s waivers related to public service loan forgiveness and income-driven repayment.
  • H.Res.1296: Requests the President and directs the Secretary of Education to transmit, respectively, certain documents to the House of Representatives relating to the legal authority to forgive Federal student loan debt.
  • H.Res.1273: Directs the President to provide certain documents in the President's possession to the House of Representatives relating to communication between the executive branch and the American Federation of Teachers regarding reopening schools and supporting safe, in-person learning.
