Foxx Reacts to Democrats' PSLF Scheme

Today, Republican Leader of the Education and Labor Committee Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement in response to the Education Department’s unilateral changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program:

“Each year Americans take on more and more student debt and each year taxpayers are on the hook for more and more of it. Instead of stepping up to address the root causes of this $1.7 trillion repayment crisis, Democrats in Congress are willingly surrendering their role as legislators because they are either afraid or just unwilling to do the work they were elected to do.

“Today’s announcement makes it clear - Democrats are happy to allow the Biden administration to be judge, jury, and executioner if it pleases their progressive base. Which is ironic given the ridicule and shaming of the previous administration for simply following the disastrous law Democrats unilaterally created.

“What do the American people get in return for this back door scheme from the Democrats? Taxpayers, a majority of whom don’t have a college degree, get to foot the bill for the Biden administration’s far-left fiat. The price tag will be in the billions; combined with Biden's inflation crisis and the fact that government always overspends but rarely delivers, taxpayers should expect to be on the hook for much, much more.

“Today’s announcement, Biden’s latest abuse of executive authority, is another step towards blanket student loan forgiveness and the Democrats are allowing it to happen in the dark because their caucus is in disarray and incapable of passing anything in the light of day.”

Background: Yesterday, Republican Leader Foxx and Republican Leader of the Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee Greg Murphy, M.D. (R-NC) sent a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona urging him to follow the law and work with Congress to reform PSLF.
