Foxx Welcomes USDA Extension of Child Nutrition Waivers

Republican Leader of the Education and Labor Committee, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), issued the following statement in support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) announcement to extend nationwide school nutrition program waivers through the end of the 2020-2021 academic year:

“Today’s action from USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue will provide families with flexibility and peace of mind that students in need will have access to nutritious meals through the end of the school year.

“Federal programs that help feed students during these unprecedented times must remain easy to operate for families who are already burdened by the pandemic. Secretary Perdue and President Trump understood the need for quick action and acted accordingly. Thanks to their leadership, American families and students will continue to have access to free school meals.”

NOTE: Republican Leader Foxx led a letter to Secretary Perdue in August, along with 24 Republican Members of the Education and Labor Committee and Agriculture Committee, urging USDA to implement child nutrition program flexibilities allowed under law. On August 31, Secretary Perdue acted upon this request and extended USDA’s waiver authority through the end of the calendar year. Today’s announcement follows up on that action by extending the waivers through the end of the academic year.
