DOL Rule Will Increase Labor Union Accountability, Transparency

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 30, 2020

Today, Republican Workforce Leaders on the Education and Labor Committee, Reps. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Tim Walberg (R-MI), applauded the Department of Labor’s (DOL) proposed rule to increase financial accountability and transparency for labor unions:

“Union bosses have a long history of corruption. In light of the ongoing federal investigation into the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and resulting convictions, today’s proposal from DOL to modernize and strengthen financial oversight of unions is welcome news. As the Republican Workforce Leaders of the Education and Labor Committee, we've been disappointed by the failure on the part of our Democrat colleagues to hold union bosses accountable for corrupt behavior. Committee Republicans have sent Committee Democrats three letters requesting a public hearing to examine the rampant corruption within UAW leadership. These letters have gone unanswered while House Democrats continue to turn a blind eye towards blatant union corruption. In striking contrast, the Trump administration is taking needed steps to increase private-sector union transparency and accountability. The proposed rule issued today, once finalized, will promote union democracy and help ensure labor unions better serve workers.”
