WASHINGTON, D.C. | June 7, 2017
Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, released the following joint statement after the Department of Labor (DOL) rescinded regulatory guidance by the Obama administration that narrowed the definition of independent contractor and expanded
the definition of joint employer
This is another positive step toward undoing the damage of the Obama administration’s extreme and partisan agenda. The regulatory guidance that is now reversed only served to empower union leaders while hurting small businesses, undermining economic growth, and limiting opportunities for hardworking men and women.
Today’s announcement represents important progress, but there’s more work to be done to deliver the regulatory relief the American people need. Eliminating the job-crushing joint employer scheme in its entirety continues to be a leading priority for the committee, and we remain committed to getting the job done.
In 2015, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce approved the Protecting Local Business Opportunity Act to restore the long-standing definition of what it means to be an employer under the National Labor Relations Act.
