Education and Labor Committee Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and the leader of the Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-IN) are urging the U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to show progress in fighting the China threat on college and university campuses.
In the letter, the Representatives point out the need for greater oversight of higher education institutions’ disclosure of foreign gifts and contracts mandated by the Higher Education Act. Under the Trump administration, the Department of Education modernized the reporting process and found $6.5 billion in unreported gifts and contracts, many of which included examples of the Chinese Communist Party seeking influence on college campuses and attempting to steal intellectual property from American research facilities.
The letter comes as Congress deliberates authorizing additional taxpayer dollars for research on university campuses via the Endless Frontier Act.
